Etretat – the cliffs
The area offers some of the best-known sights in Upper Normandy in France and a popular day-trip destination. The spectacular limestone cliffs run for about 4 km around the coast, with an height of 70 meters above sea water. There are three naturally occurring arches made of limestone, and a pointed rock formation called “L’ Aiguille”, that are worth checking out, and make for some stunning photos. A pebble beach lays below the cliffs, allowing visitors to walk and stay directly by the sea.
The area was made famous through the centuries, with several impressionist artists like Monet and Manet who were inspired to paint the cliffs of Étretat. Authors such as Guy de Maupassant and Alexandre Dumas were inspired to write stories set here.
You can go for some stunning walks along the cliff tops, where further surprises await, including a breath-taking golf course. Return to the famous cliff formations on the beach at night and you can see them magically lit up.
Etretat – the town
Historically a fishing village, Etretat became a popular seaside resort during the 19th century. This popularity was enhanced by the large number of famous artists and authors who were inspired by Etretat: Monet, Maupassant, Victor Hugo and Flaubert were all enthusiasts of the region around the town The small resort behind the cliffs is full of charm. Along with some extravagant hotels, the remarkable wooden covered market stands out. Le Clos Lupin, a typical old villa in town, conceals mysteries for visitors, while the churches around Etretat stand out more prominently.
Etretat – the gardens
“Les Jardins d’Étretat” are a stunning modern addition to this famous seaside resort. Created in 1905 by Madame Thebault (a famous actress of the early XXth century, and a close friend of Claude Monet), built a house and started a small avant-garde garden here. That garden is now home to some incredible stone sculptures that melt into the sculptured ivy shrubbery, all of this on a hillside looking out over the magnificent coastal panorama! Created by famous landscape architect Alexandre Grivko, this site will impress impressionism lovers as well as admirers of contemporary art.
